80's advertising

It wasn't until after Sentaro Kuwahara's death that his modest family business, that started in 1918, found international fame; all thanks to the 80's blockbuster E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. Although BMX started in the early 70's when children began racing their bicycles on dirt tracks in SoCal, BMX only really gained popularity in the 1980's, that was a large part in why BMX bikes were used in the movie & why Kuwahara specifically? Why...well, all thanks to the geezer in Spielberg's crew that decided to call Kuwahara Bikes & big-ups to 80's advertising for coining the name "E.T. Bikes" Have fun reminiscing!

Modern day slavery

The Killers have partnered with UNICEF and USAID to produce a music video that dramatically highlights the dangers and impact of trafficking for sexual exploitation, particularly for young women.

“There is almost no country in the world now that isn’t affected by human trafficking in some way,” said Susan Bissell, UNICEF’s Head of Child Protection. “The statistics are staggering. More than 1.2 million children are being trafficked each year and nearly 80 per cent of all trafficking is for sexual exploitation, and the most at risk are girls. We see this music video as a powerful way to reach out and raise awareness among young people, across borders and across language barriers.”

The Goodnight, Travel Well video is directed by David Slade, who made "Hard Candy" and "30 Days of Night."

Goodbye Horses

“Would you f#@! me? I’d f#@! me. I’d f#@! me hard.” Who can forget the scene from the 1991 film, ‘Silence of the Lambs’, where serial killer Buffalo Bill, plays dress up, applies make-up, and tucks his penis between his legs, whilst dancing in front of a video camera to, "Goodbye Horses”? A collision of an evil psyche and a beautiful song that permeated in the minds of all that viewed this scene. “Goodbye Horses” was written and performed by William Garvey and sung by female songstress, Q Lazzarus in 1988. Word on the street: Long-lost L.A. tagger-artist to have first legit art show

Daniel Ramos, AKA Chaka, was 18 when he was arrested and charged in 1991 with 48 counts of vandalism, trespassing and causing
$500,000 in property damage. Chaka’s signature tag had appeared in a staggering 10,000 locations from Orange County to San Francisco. At the height of his notoriety Chaka was demonized by mainstream media and culture as being little more than a prolific vandal. At the same time he was celebrated by street artists who admired the ability of a teenager from the projects to literally make his mark on the vast, glitzy LA cityscape in such a ubiquitous manner. He is credited with breaking away from the New York “wildstyle” popular at the time and introducing clearer, more blockish lettering into tagging. Chaka was one of the first to create a reputation as a recognizable individual tagger, and spawned many imitators. However Chaka was not just a lone operative. He was part of the LOD crew and as such, his work in reclaiming hard to reach places of the cityscape (freeway overpasses, walls, trains etc) on behalf of his crew is recognized by fellow taggers as a selfless achievement for LA’s graffiti scene as a whole.

LA times has a feature up giving further background on Chaka here
